Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for Self Defense

I would like to talk today about something that is not usually discussed often in the martial arts world today, that is, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for self defense. Usually I hear people who have done traditional martial arts for years, such as Karate, Tae Kwon Do, and various striking arts talk about how Brazilian Jiu Jitsu does not work on the streets, often times they talk about how ground fighting would be useless in a street fight if you have to fight more than one person. Well, it turns out that Brazilian Jiu Jitsu has an array of self-defense techniques from the standing position, and I can tell you these techniques are quite efficient. Many people who study striking systems often say that they will knock someone out before their attacker can grapple them, but truth is, it is quite difficult to keep someone from closing the distance between striking and grappling range even if you are quite proficient in striking. In reality, it is not always necessary to grapple on the floor when defending yourself, but it is necessary to learn how to fight in close-quarters, even when standing, since so many people still try to headlock their victims in the street, or grab their clothes before punching them, and sometimes try more sophisticated techniques like choking you from behind. Fortunately with a little bit of practice you can learn some awesome self-defense techniques from Brazilian Jiu Jitsu that are not only effective but very easy to learn. One such technique is doing a shoulder throw against someone who is trying to attack you, or getting someone in a straight armbar when they attempt to grab you by your shirt. All of these techniques are good choices when someone attacks you, and if you can pull them off, there is no need to fight on the ground.

Lastly, I would like to mention a few defenses against weapon attacks, first and foremost however, I must mention that nearly all martial arts instructors tell you to run away if an attacker has a weapon, use distractions, negotiate with your attacker, and so on, but if you must fight an attacker with a weapon there are some options as well. I will go ahead and talk about defense against a club, I have seen some techniques from Brazilian Jiu Jitsu that are good, but with a little bit of modification you can make these better. The first example is when attacked with a club it is usually better not to block the arm with the club, as they may pull their arm close to their body and hit you anyways, but if you sidestep the club and then apply an armlock, it would be much more efficient. In this case, using an armlock against a club is incredibly effective, and you can also disarm the club as well, and finish with a strike against the enemy using their own club. All in all, if you want to learn some great self defense techniques, check out what Brazilian Jiu Jitsu has to offer, if you have trouble finding this information in a school, just search the internet, you will no doubt find some great videos and books on the subject of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for self-defense that can come in handy if you are ever attacked.

Sprucing Up Your Backyard with Awesome Planters

Just recently my father-in-law asked me and my husband to help him clean his yard because it was quite messy. I noticed that he had many different decorations in his backyard including numerous planters, and I decided that when I own a house I would like to have a large backyard and decorate it with planters as well. When I arrived home I decided to search the internet to find a place that has great planters and other various outdoor decorations and that is when I came across E Planters dot com.

E Planters online store have a huge assortment of planters including small planters, large planters in a variety of styles, and in a variety of materials including concrete planters, fiberglass planters, and not only that they also carry a huge assortment of indoor planters as well. I love all of the planters I had seen although I really have to say that the rectangular planters are my personal favorite. So if you are looking for planters to really make your house look incredibly beautiful, then you have come to the right place.

Resident Evil 3

As many of you may know, I am a huge fan of Resident Evil video games ever since I played the Resident Evil 1 for the Playstation. Although there are several new titles in the Resident Evil series, such as Resident Evil 5 Gold, and also the newest Resident Evil movie came out, I would like to talk about another great title, Resident Evil 3 Nemesis. Resident Evil 3 takes place during the events of Resident Evil 2 and you play as S.T.A.R.S. member Jill Valentine and Carlos Olivera (briefly). One of the most well known characters in this game is the enemy, known as the Nemesis, which is an incredibly powerful creature that seems unstoppable, and it also has an obsession for killing S.T.A.R.S. members and anyone and anything else that gets in its way. I found it kind of funny that the Nemesis actually had killed other zombies just to get to me, when playing as Jill Valentine.

Some of the main differences in gameplay when compared to Resident Evil 1 and Resident Evil 2 includes the option to turn around quickly when playing as Jill or Carlos. What I also liked about Resident Evil 3 was that you can visit many new locations within Racoon City such as a restaurant, gas station, church, park, newspaper office and many more. I also liked the fact that there are many new weapons, my personal favorite is the mine thrower, which shoots an explosive dart at enemies and is capable of blowing up several zombies at one time. I also liked the Freeze rounds which are for the grenade launcher and are loaded with liquid nitrogen, in actuality, the freeze rounds are one of your best options for killing the Nemesis. To add more fun to the game, it is also possible to create your own ammunition and grenades by collecting different types of gunpowder. It is also important to note that each time you "kill" the Nemesis, he drops a special item, including gun parts, which when collected you can create a special 9mm pistol and a special shotgun.

All in all, if you are a Resident Evil fan, or even a fan of Capcom games in general, check out Resident Evil 3, it is available on Playstation 1,NintendoGamecube, PC, Dreamcast, and can even be downloaded on Playstation Network.

Rossi 851 Revolver

I am very excited about a new firearm that I recently purchased at a local gun store, it is a Rossi model 851 38 special revolver. I was not looking for a new handgun, however the local gun store had this gun at a great price, it was $110 and came with a box, although it was used, this was a great deal. The company that made this firearm of course is Rossi from Brazil, which I believe still makes firearms together with Taurus, they are known for high quality handguns at a great price. I remember seeing this gun and I liked the look and feel of it, it kind of reminded me of the famous Colt Python 357 magnum which was featured in the classic video game, Resident Evil, although this firearm is a 38 and not a 357. I plan to take this gun out to the range next week, and I have to say I am very excited, and I purchased a few speed loaders for this revolver as well. You might be thinking, what good is a 6 shot 38 special revolver in this day and age? Well, the gun is excellent for self defense, target practice or just collecting. The 38 special is good for self defense as well, since it is about as powerful as a 9mm, you can purchase hollow point ammunition, revolvers tend to be very accurate, and 6 shots is just enough firepower. I like the simplicity of this gun, if you are new to target shooting, or know someone who is, this weapon is excellent. The first handgun I learned to fire was a Ruger GP100 357 magnum revolver, and I believe that I learned all of the fundamentals about shooting with that gun, posture, aiming, loading, and I hope that I can really teach my wife these fundamentals as well with this new firearm. Again, as with all firearms, please excercise safety, and if you purchase a weapon like this enjoy all the fun that you will have at the range!
