Springfield M14 and M1A Rifles

Today, I would like to talk about an awesome weapon that is not as well known as the AK-47 or the M16, this rifle is the M14, which is used by the Military, or the M1A, which is the civilian version. The M14 rifle, might be one of the most awesome weapons on the planet. The M14 is really an M1 Garand that has been modified and updated. The M1 Garand is the rifle that was used by US Armed Forces in World War II, and while it was a wonderful rifle, and the best rifle of that time, the United States felt that giving the gun a little more firepower, a new caliber, and a flash hider would not hurt. In 1957, the M14 was adopted as the service rifle for the US military, and it was first battle tested in Vietnam. Unfortunately, it was felt that this rifle was too bulky for jungle warfare, and not up to par with the AK-47, which the NVA and Vietcong used frequently. For this reason, the US military began searching for a replacement for the M14, which, for better or worse, was the M16 rifle. The M14 was still used with great effect as a sniper rifle, due to its cartridge, the 7.62 x 51 mm, better known as the 308 Winchester, and its 20 round magazine, as well as its semi-automatic rate of fire. This cartridge, 7.62 x 51 mm, is not to be confused with the 7.62 x 39 mm, which is the weaker round used in the AK-47 and SKS rifles. The M14 was one of the last Battle Rifles in use, and the age of the Assault Rifles would begin. Today, the M14 and its variants, which include the M21, are used in Iraq and Afghanistan with great effect, as a sniper rifle. For civilians wishing to own one of these wonderful weapons, you can purchase them from Springfield Amory, although they are somewhat expensive, and trust me, with a .308 cartridge, this is an excellent rifle for hunting, and a good rifle for target shooting if you can find surplus ammo. I can tell you, when it comes to rifles, the M14 is one of the absolute best rifles on the planet, and with the new SOCOM 16 rifle, from Springfield Armory, the M14 is now a good alternative to the AR15, with the SOCOM 16's, 16 inch barrel. So whether you are a gun collector, hunter, or target shooter, this would make another great addition to your collection.

Classic NES Games: Legend of Zelda

I decided that I would begin a series of blogs about classic NES games, and what better game to start this new series of blogs than Legend of Zelda for the Nintendo Entertainment System. The Legend of Zelda was created by Shigeru Miyamoto back in 1986. I remember my first experience seeing Legend of Zelda, I was at a friends house, and I was in awe seeing this awesome game for the first time. I look back, and it seems kind of ridiculous compared to today's new video games graphic-wise, but the story, the gameplay, and even the music is still great. The wonderful thing about this game, is that today there is a sense of nostalgia that you get from this game, it really takes me back to my childhood. I remember purchasing this game in the early 1990's and staying up late playing this game until my mom would get after me and tell me to go to bed. This game really brings back memories, it has Link, in his original form, Octoroks, Impa, Zelda, and of course Ganon, as well as many others. The objective of the game was to fight monsters, defeat bosses that guard different dungeons, and collect pieces of the Triforce, and collect power ups, and items until you fight Ganon and restore peace to Hyrule. The triforce is an item that is in the shape of triangle and has special powers, similar to that of the ring from Lord of the Rings. The game is great, especially when you get all of the weapons, such as the bow and arrow, the magical sword, and the boomerang just to name a few.

It is kind of funny, but I actually played through this game only about 2 months ago, after I purchased the Legend of Zelda Collector's edition game for the Nintendo Game Cube, which has 4 Legend of Zelda titles. For whatever reason, when I was younger, I never played through the game, and through the years, I just had to beat Ganon in the final dungeon, and it was worth the wait. So if any of you out there want to play this awesome game, check it out, there are classic NES systems on ebay, or if you have a Nintendo Wii, or Gamecube, you can purchase the collector's edition for the Gamecube which can be found at Gamestop, ebay, or half.com. I can tell you that you will probably enjoy this game if you are a fan of the series, so you can see where it all started, you will not regret it.

1911 Pistols

For those of you who have read my blogs before, I am sure you might be wondering about the 1911 style pistols. The 1911 pistol, or Colt 1911 pistol, was created in the year 1911 by John Browning in the year 1911. The 1911 pistol was a modified version of the earlier 1905 pistol which fired a 45 ACP cartridge, which is known for its stopping power. It is known that the reason for the creation of the pistol was because the Colt 38 revolvers used by the US Military in the Philippines lacked stopping power, when the Americans were fighting with the Moro Filipino warriors armed with blades in the early 1900s. For this reason, the US Military began using 45 Colt revolvers until a more suitable modern day pistol was introduced, that being the Colt 1911 pistol in 45 ACP which was a shorter version of the 45 Colt Cartridge. The biggest improvement over the Colt 45 Revolver was that the 1911 was a single action semi-automatic pistol which was fed by a 7 shot detachable magazine, which meant more firepower. In 1911 the Colt 1911 was adopted by the US military and served until being replaced, for better or worse, by the Beretta M92 in the 1980's.

The 1911 pistol, originally manufactured by Colt, has been made by many different companies from many different countries including Sig (Austria), Springfield, Kimber, Rock Island,(Philippines), Taurus (Brazil), STI, Smith and Wesson, and many more. Although the original 1911 was chambered to fire the 45 ACP, you can purchase them in many different cartridges, including 9mm, 10mm, 40 S&W, 50 GI, 22 LR, 38 super, and a few more. I had owned 2 1911 pistols, one was a Rock Island, and the other was a Springfield. For those looking for a cheaper pistol, with high quality, the Rock Island is an excellent choice, I had owned one and it worked perfectly. If you wish to own one for self-defense purposes, I would suggest purchasing the Kimber, which is the same one that is used by the LAPD SWAT, it is very high quality, and very accurate. For those interested in Professional Target Shooting, STI is one of the best, although a bit pricey. Other high quality choices include the SIG, and Smith and Wesson. Personally, I like the double-action pistols for self-defense, but I still find a sense of Nostalgia in the 1911 style pistols, as it was used in both World Wars, Korea, and Vietnam.

Today, many Law Enforcement agencies, and some groups in the military still use the 1911 pistol. Ask a relative of yours who fought in World War II, or Korea, and I am sure they can tell you many stories about the 1911 pistol. Without a doubt, we can say that the 1911 pistol is "America's Handgun", and many veterans are here today because this pistol saved their life. Ironically, in the Philippines today, most Filipino firearm owners, police officers, and those in the military have great respect for the 1911 pistol. All of the relatives of my wifes family in the Philippines who own a firearm, own a 1911 pistol. So if you want to own a piece of history, or like target shooting, or want a pistol for self-defense, there is a 1911 pistol for you.

AK47 Rifle

I hope everyone enjoyed my other blog discussing the AR15 rifle, today I would like to tell you about another popular military-like rifle, which is available in a civilian version, the AK47. The AK47 was introduced in the Soviet Union in the late 1940's by Lieutenant General Mikhail Timofeyevich Kalashnikov following World War II. AK47 is an acronym which translated into English means Automatic Kalashnikov 47, for the year in which it was designed. Soon after the USSR adopted the rifle, many other countries (mostly communist countries) such as China, North Korea, many Eastern European countries, and many other nations around the world would adopt the rifle. Today the rifle is the number one most used weapon in the entire world. In the United States, a law-abiding citizen can own one of these wonderful rifles in a semi-automatic version for a good price depending on which city or state you live in. While the AK47 is not anywhere near as accurate as an AR15 it is much more accurate than any pistol you can find, and is probably the most reliable semi-automatic rifle anyone can find. One of the other great things about these rifles is that you can find them in a variety of calibers, including the original 7.62 x 39 mm, 5.45 x 39 mm, .223, .308, 12 gauge, and many more. Yes, you heard right, there is an AK-47 that fires 12 gauge shotgun shells! Today some of the most common civilian AK-47s are made by Century Arms, Izhmash (Saiga), Robinson Arms, Arsenal Inc. and a few more. So if you are a new (law-abiding) or experienced firearm owner and are looking for a cheap inexpensive firearm that is fun to shoot and excellent for home-defense, or hunting, the AK-47 is a great gun for those on a budget, or those who just collect guns for their historical value, this is a great choice.
